From 1974 Armen Elbakyan studied at the acting department of the Yerevan Fine Arts and Theatre Institute, from 1981 at the directing department.
In 1975-1982 he worked in the G. Sundukyan National Academic Theatre as an actor, in 1982-1988 as a director. In 1988-1994 he worked in State Musical Comedy Theater after H. Paronyan as an Artistic Director. In 1994 he founded the Drama and Comedy Theatre named after Edgar Elbakyan, in 2000-2015 he worked as a director at the Yerevan State Puppet Theatre. Since 2012 he has been working at the Armenian State Pedagogical University as the head of the Department of Directing. He works at the Yerevan State Institute of Theatre and Cinematography as the head of the acting course, professor.
Since 2015 Armen Elbakyan has been working as an artistic director at the G. Sundukyan National Academic Theatre.
In recent years, the plays staged by Armen Elbakyan in the G. Sundukyan National Theatre are: Franz Werfel’s “The Forty Days of Musa Dagh”, Gabriel Sundukyan’s “Pepo”, Zhora Harutyunyan’s “Bride from the North”, Ken Keese’s “One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, Hakob Paronyan’s “Honorable Beggars”, Bertolt Brecht’s “The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui’”.
